Carla was the only daughter of three children born to Annabelle (Bowers) and Walter R. (Bob) Platt.

In 1967, she graduated from Ottawa High School and in 1982 from Ottawa University.

On December 7, 1984 she was united in marriage to Larry R. James in Topeka, Kansas.

She worked for Commity Action from 1987 to 1997. She later worked for Topeka Independent Living Resource Center as a Finance Manager until she retired in 2010. Carla was an active member Soroptimist International-Topeka, serving as president from 2005-2010. Vice President in 2004 and currently was the Treasurer. She served as chair of the Women's Opportunity Award,Membership and Community Services Committees. Carla was instrumentalin starting SI-Topeka Feedind families classes which help low-income families learn basic cooking skillsand was recogizned as the SI-Topeka Member of the year in 2002 and 2003.

She is preceded in death by her parents, step father, Robert Pence and brother Roger.

Carla is survived by her husband, son and eight step children, 29 grandchildren. One brother, two step brothers and one step sister.

Carla was a very caring person who lived life to the fulliest. She loved being a mother and grandmother. She loved getting together with her children and grandchildren whom she loved so much.
