PFC Thomas was killed by a booby trap while conducting a search and destroy mission in an area between the Fihol and the Ho Bo Woods. Served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Mechanized Infantry Regiment (Bobcats), 25th Infantry Division. Recipient of the Bronze Star for Valor, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and RVN Campaign Medal. Services for Pfc. Lewis McCoy (Coy) Thomas, 27, 428 Westover Road, who was killed in combat in Viet Nam April 13, will held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Nalley-Pickle Rosewood Chapel.
The Rev. V. Ward Jackson, pastor of the First Church of God, will officiate, assisted by Chaplain (Lt. Col) Benjamin F. Meacham, Webb Air Force Base Protestant chaplain. Military graveside rates and burial will be in Trinity Memorial Park.
He was born Dec. 29, 1938, in Big Spring, and graduated from Big Spring High School in 1957. He had attended Howard County Junior College prior to entering the service nine years ago.
He arrived in Viet Nam Jan. 13 1966, and was with the combat unit of Co. A. 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division. until his death. He was a member of the First Church of God.
Survivors include his parents Mr. and Mrs. Truett Thomas, Big Spring; also several aunts and uncles. He was a grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Phillips and the late Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Thomas.
