Hiram Bennett was born in Franklin County, Georgia, and had many siblings. He was one of at least three sons that fought for the Confederacy. It is believed he moved to Carroll County with his parents as a young boy. He joined the 7th Confederate Cavalry which later became merged with the 10th Georgia Cavalry along with a cousin Asa G. Chandler, June 16, 1862. He was a 3rd Corporal and served as a blacksmith for his brigade. He served through the war surrendering in North Carolina in April of 1865. More on this war career later!
