DORA BOYD
1916-2011
Dora Boyd passed away peacefully at Landsun Home Health Services on Tuesday, July 12, 2011. She would have been 95 in 10 days.
Dora was born July 22, 1916, to Chester and Amie Brower in Bowie County, Texas. She was the fourth of nine children, growing up on a farm. In 1934, she graduated valedictorian from Avery High School. She attended Paris Junior College and graduated from East Texas State Univeristy. Dora was a dedicated educator, beginning her career as an elementary teacher in a one-room school, teaching grades one through eight. In 1942, she married Earl Boyd in Bakersfield, Calif. They moved to Carlsbad in 1946. After raising her three children, she returned to teaching. Dora retired after teaching 22 years at Hillcrest Elementary School.
Dora was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday school for many years, served on the church board, was president of the Missionary Society and was Sunday school superintendent. She was a member of the Friendly Helpers Extension Club and Retired Teachers.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Earl; and her beloved son, Bobby; five brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include her daughters; Judy Floyd and husband, Mike of Las Cruces, N.M., and Betty Egbom of Carlsbad, N.M. She was the proud grandmother of Jennifer Loflin and husband, Wayde, Jonathan Floyd and wife, Amy, and Jason Floyd and wife, Rachel; Zachary Loflin, Jacob Loflin, Jordan Floyd, Eden Floyd and Uriah Floyd; sisters-in-law; Eula Grisham of Rising Star, Texas, and Fannie Brower of Fort Worth, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews who were very special to her. She is also survived by her church family and the hundreds of children she taught.
Her family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Landsun Homes and Landsun Hospice for their compassionate care.
Pallbearers will be Mike Floyd, Jonathan Floyd, Jason Floyd, Wayde Loflin, Zachary Loflin, Jacob Loflin and Randy Pipes. Honorary pallbearers are Bruce Pardue, Morris Worley, Don Fisher and James Sturdivant.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today (July 15) at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2011, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Kimberlin officiating. Interment will follow the service in Sunset Gardens Memorial Park, Carlsbad, N.M. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
