Husband of Mary Thompson and Mary Underhill. Son of Timothy Delavan and Hannah Bouton. Father of Deborah, Sarah, Cordelia (born 1789, died 1793), Laura and Cordelia (born 1793, died 1872).

During the Revolution, he served as Major in the 3rd regiment of Westchester County militia. He had command of a company that escorted General George Washington into the City of New York to take possession of the city after the evacuation of the English troops.

Nathaniel had eight brothers that served in the Revolutionary War as well.
