Renee Marie Martin, 51, of Barrington, Ill., formerly of Waukesha, died June 27, 2006, at home surrounded by her family.

On April 30, 1955, she was born in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Gloria and Ernest Martin.

She moved to Waukesha and graduated in 1973 from Waukesha South High School, where she was an AFS student in Bombay, India, and a member of the National Honor Society. Later, as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she received her law degree.

She married Dale Koehler in 1976, and the couple lived in Spain and Belgium while he played professional basketball. Dale and Renee's son Samuel Martin Koehler was born in 1993.

She practiced law with Cooke & Franke law firm in Milwaukee and then joined Wisconsin Bell, Ameritech as a corporate attorney. In 1989, she transferred to Ameritech-Washington, D.C. to serve as vice president and general counsel.

In 1995, Renee moved to Chicago as vice president and general counsel of Ameritech Cable Division, and three years later, she joined Focal Communication as senior vice president and general counsel. In 1999, she was a member of the senior management team with that company that completed a successful stock Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Focal Communications.

Renee was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2001. She later retired from Focal Communication. Along with being an accomplished artist, she was an avid gardener.

Surviving are her husband; Dale, her son, Samuel; her mother, Gloria Martin; her father, Ernst Martin; her brother, Daniel (Jan) Martin; her mother-in-law, LaVerne Koehler, and other family members and friends.
