James Madison Merritt was born on September 28th 1837 in Blooming Grove New York, and was the son of Caleb Merritt (37) and Charity Merritt (35/nee Taylor) .
Anne Eliza Burneer married James Madison Merritt in the town of Blooming Grove, New York in approximately 1859.
Civil War record shows that James M. Merritt was wounded at the Battle of Petersburg that took place between the 16th and 22nd of June 1864. James was in Regiment H at this time. According to his Civil War Service Record, James M. Merritt joined the the First Engineers Infantry of the Union Army on August 24 1864. James M. Merritt and family lived at 172 East 63rd Street in New York City at the time he had re-enlisted with the Union Army. James Merritt was promoted from Private to Corporal of the Union Army in Lancaster, Virginia during the Civil War on September 1st 1864. Civil War Service Record: James M. Merritt had re-enlisted on Aug. 24 1864 as a private; was promoted to Corporal of 1st Engineers Infantry on March 1 1865. Fought in Battles of Chaffin's Farm and Honey Hill. James M. Merritt's Civil War service ended when he was mustered out on July 3rd 1865 at Hilton Head, South Carolina. He was 5' 5" tall, and had blue eyes and light hair. Prior to the war he had been a carpenter.

James Madison Merritt was interred at Hillside Cemetery in Middletown New York (Section 5 Lot 1258); his wife Ann Eliza Merritt (nee Burneer) was interred beside him she passed several months later in September 1903.
