Ann Marie (Axtman) Schall, the daughter of Florian and Mary Eva (Leboldus) Axtman was born in her parent's farm home in rural Tuscarora Township, Pierce County (north of Balta), North Dakota on August 6, 1924. She died at the age of 88 years on Monday, November 12, 2012 at the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby.
Ann was raised in the rural farm home of her parents north of Balta, North Dakota and attended a country school one quarter mile from her home, graduating from Balta High School in 1942. After her schooling, she helped on the farm and worked for area farmers and neighbors; also helping in the cook car at threshing time.
On October 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to Nick Schall Jr. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Balta. Following their marriage, the couple made their home, raised their family and farmed on the Schall Family farm near Fulda, North Dakota. In 1978, the couple retired into Rugby. In Rugby, Ann worked in housekeeping at the Econo Lodge for a number of years.
She was a former member of St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Fulda and taught CCD classes there for several years. She was a current member of Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers; the Eagles Auxiliary, where she held various offices and received the "Mrs. Eagle Award"; a member of the Tunbridge Homemakers; a charter member of the North Dakota Historical Society and served as secretary for the Germans from Russia Heritage Society. Ann also served as the recording secretary for the Catholic Order of Foresters, served as an election judge for many years in the township, and enjoyed playing cards and keeping busy with her flower garden.
Ann is survived by her husband, Nick; children, Diane Dodd of Rugby, Duane (Carlotta) of Towner and David (Paula Steiert) of Bismarck; grandchildren, Becky (Jamie Ferensic) Heilman, Cindy (Craig) Williams, Dustin (Bobbi) Schall, Travis Schall, Mandy (Mike) McNeff and Beth (Phil) Berg; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Andrew Axtman of Rugby; a sister, Elizabeth Angstadt of Rugby; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Louis, August and Rochus; sister, Helen Lascurain; sister in law, Mary Brown Axtman; and her parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2012 at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby with burial in the church cemetery. Father Tom Graner, Celebrant.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby. There will be no reviewal in the Church.
Rosary and Vigil prayers will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home.
