Born October 30, 1842 in Ireland. Son of Patrick Kelley and Julia Hynes. Date of immigration to the U.S. not yet determined.

John Kelley enlisted in the Sixth Vermont on August 30, 1862. At the time of enlistment he was 22 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches tall, light complected, blue eyes, and brown hair. Occupation at time of enlistment was Laborer.

The Sixth Regiment records show that he was wounded near Funkstown, Maryland on July 10, 1863, and at the Battle of The Wilderness on May 5, 1864. The wound received at the Wilderness would eventually cause amputation of his left arm.

John Kelley moved to St. Louis, MO. after the war. His occupation in some City Directories list him as a fireman and a laborer.
John Kelley and his wife Mary Hastings had seven children: Mary, born 1863, died 1893; Julia, born 1865: John, born 1870; Ellen, born 1871; Elizabeth, born 1873; Michael, born 1876; Catharine, born 1879.

After the death of his wife, John returned to Burlington Vermont. He died at Fanny Allen Hospital in Winooski, Vermont from Acute dilitation of the heart on August 22, 1917 at the age of 75 years, 9 months, and 22 days.

John Kelley was buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lot No. 177, Block E, in Burlington Vermont.
Records indicate there is an upright marker at his grave.
