Saluda, often called "Ludie" by her family was born in 1851 in Tennessee. Probably in Smith County, near her Grandfather, Caleb Preston's home. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Logan County in Kentucky. Saluda attended school and learned to read and write. After her father came home from the Civil War, she married another Veteran, William Berry Turner when she was barely 16 years old. She had 4 children, the youngest of whom was only 3 years old when her husband died while attending Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee. Saluda moved home to live with her parents and started the long drawn out process of obtaining a widow's pension. She faced heartbreak again when about six years after the death of her husband, she remarried Jacob Danner. Jacob swindled Ludie of land and money, before she discovered that he was already married and her marriage was a bigamous one. She again faced the court system in an effort to prove the fraud and get a divorce. She returns to the use of the name Turner and in 1900 is listed as a widow living with her son William. All of Saluda's children lived to adulthood and although, she did not live to see them all prosper, she had more than 16 grandchildren.
