Twins Ada and Alice were born to Rebecca Greenough of New Brunswick in late 1859 or early 1860. Ada's vital record of death in Portland notes her father was Major Greenough, Major likely being a military designation rather than a first name. We find Rebecca and her twin daughters listed as paupers in the 1860 census for Portland, living at the Alms House. Major Greenough is not mentioned. Ada died of measles the following year. No record is found for her sister Alice, who perhaps escaped the illness. Rebecca's whereabouts following the 1860 listing are not known. The Alms House was for all who lived there temporary quarters. It was filled with poor, ill and friendless people and it must have been an especially sad existence for this destitute mother and her infant twin daughters. Ada would have been buried in one of the "strangers' grounds" at Eastern Cemetery, where no gravemarkers are found for those interred.
