JOHN BONE
John Bone, well known and highly respected, one of Oshawa's oldest citizens, died in his 67th year at his home on Colborne street at 2 o'clock Saturday morning, following an illness of about two months duration. Born in Londonderry, Ireland, Mr. Bone was brought to this country as a baby of two years by his parents who took up residence in Cornwall for four years. Since he was six years of age Mr. Bone has resided in this city. For some years he attended the old Centre street public school, after which he spent about seven years learning his trade at the Joseph Hall works. He then was employed in the Mason Works for two years, going from there to the McLaughlin Carriage works, where for twenty-seven years he worked in the blacksmith shop. The last two years of his life he spent at home as his health was failing, previous to that he spent seven years in the Williams "Piano Works". Mr. Bone was always an ardent hunter and fisher, his favorite haunt for the latter being Lake Scugog. He was a member of Phoenix Lodge, I.O.O.F. No. 22, and also of St. Andrews United Church. The death of his mother occurred exactly five years to the day, previous to his own death, and in the past three years he has been pre-deceased by two sons and one daughter, the latter's death occurring just nine weeks ago. Since the death of his daughter his health has failed rapidly. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his wife Hattie Cole, four daughters, Mrs. S. Hentig of Toronto, Mrs. Norman Legge of Oshawa, Ethel and Margaret at home, and one son, William also at home; five grandchildren; five brothers, of whom Mr. Bone was the eldest, William James of Wenetchee, Washington; Alex of Freemount, Ohio; Joseph of Big Bay, Michigan; David and Samuel of Oshawa; two sisters, Mrs. Nicholas Zins of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs. E. Mann of this city.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F.J. Maxwell Monday afternoon from the family residence 42 Colborne St. west at 4 o'clock and interment made in the Union Cemetery.
Pall bearers were Messrs. William Garow, Robert Bishop, Fredrick Hobbs, Lesley Howard and Thomas Cruise.
