Joseph Sanford Jenkins' family origins are unknown. Censuses tell us he was born in South Carolina, where Jenkinses are extremely numerous. Other Jenkins families are found in the same period in counties around Cass County, but no connection has been found.

They were in Texas before the Civil War, but no military record for Joseph has been found. Some vague memories in the family suggest he served the Union, perhaps as a spy or undercover worker.

His first wife was Lucinda Amanda Taylor, born in Mississippi. They married in Mississippi in about 1845. No connection has been found for Lucinda to other Taylors in Mississippi or East Texas. Their first two children were born in Mississippi:
Nell in about 1846, according to her reported age of 14 in 1860
John Cullen 4 Dec 1850

There was some suggestion in vague family memory that Nell was the daughter of another mother, and that there were other children in Mississippi. It was suggested that Joseph had been married before marrying Lucinda.

But he would have been only 20 years old or less when he is thought to have married Lucinda in about 1845. Also their marriage was before it appears Nell was born. Another version suggests that he carried on a common-law marriage or concubinage marriage simultaneously with his marriage to Lucinda.

In 1851 or 1852 they moved to Georgia for a few years, where three of the children were born, we think in the
Atlanta area:
William Sanford in 1853
Mary Lyde or Mary Lou 20 Jan 1857
Amanda Lucinda 31 May 1859.

They moved to Cass County, Texas, before the 1860 census.
Two children were born there:
Margaret or Magurette Catherine 6 Jan 1862
Joseph Asa 28 June 1866.

Lucinda died in about January 1869. Joseph and his family were not in the 1870 census, probably because Lucinda had died shortly before the census and they may have traveled back to Mississippi or Georgia for a visit.

On 7 March 1872 Joseph married Louisa Christian, widowed in about 1870 when her husband Joseph Benjamin Christian died. In 1876 they had one son named Henry who died as an infant. He was buried on one of the farms, now the Mitchell farm.

The Christians lived on an adjoining farm, and after they married Joseph Jenkins and Louisa Christian Jenkins maintained their two homesteads. It is uncertain when Louisa died, but it was probably before 1890, when Joseph joined his son Joseph Asa Jenkins in moving into Indian Territory. Other children stayed in Cass County or moved out to other parts of Texas.

One of Louisa's sons, Joseph Benjamin Christian Jr, who had married Joseph Asa's wife's sister, had moved to Chickasaw Nation along with Joseph Asa's sister, Margaret Catherine and her husband Nelson Winter. These three couples moved together or Joseph Asa followed shortly after the first two had moved.

They traveled north across the Red River into Choctaw Nation, then westward into Chickasaw Nation. Joseph Sanford died in 1893 in or near Marlow, on the Chisolm Trail, and is buried in the Marlow Cemetery. Joseph Asa and his family lived there for some time, and then in Ft Cobb and Mt View before moving to Chickasha after 1935.
