Dr. Frederick Cramer Applegate (1821-1899) – Dr. F. C. Applegate passed from this life at 11 p.m.., Sunday, 18 March 1899 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. M. Rumbaugh on South Chestnut Street, Ravenna.
The Dr. had been in feeble condition for some time, and at the last became prostrated, from general debility, which obliged him to take to his bed about 17 days ere he reached the end of his mortality.
Funeral services, conducted in accordance with his request, by Earl Millikan Post, G.A.R. of Windham, of which he was a member were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon Rev. W. H. Scott, Pastor of the Disciple Church officiating, and music being furnished by the Ravenna Male Quartette.
Frederick Cramer Applegate was born in Hubbard, Ohio 21 Feb. 1821, s/o John & Fanny Applegate, pioneers of the Ohio wilderness. Reared on a farm and early accustomed to industry, self-denial, and self-reliance, he laid the foundation for the success that crowned a life of honored remembrance. His elementary and common education was of an indifferent character, but possessing a mind that rose superior to his limitations, his field of mental activity expanded in accordance with his genius and he evolved from nature herself much of what afterward distinguished him in his attainments. He attended a term or two at Vienna Academy, in which he became an assistant teacher. He subsequently studied medicine in Warren and attended lectures in the old Cleveland Medical College. He afterwards graduated from Jefferson College, Philadelphia.
On 26 August 1846, he was married to Sally P. Robins, at Windham, in which little hamlet he settled and with a slight exception he resided for half a century. Two children were born to them, Fanny, now Mrs. F. M. Rambaugh of this city and C. S. Applegate of Pittsburgh. The Dr. was a strong anti-slavery Union man exemplifying his convictions by joining as a private the military organization which afterward became Co. I, 171st ONG in which he received an appointment as Surgeon and which he remained until honorable discharged.
On 21 Nov. 1898, the wife and mother with whom he had journed in dearest companionship for more than fifty years, was taken from him, and from that sad hour of separation his thoughts turned from earth life to the Home where his faith told him the loving spirit awaited his coming. And the summons was not delayed. Just four months had elapsed since the day of her departure when his form, sealed with the final impress, was borne to Maple Grove Cem. to be laid beside that of her who has welcomed him to a Higher Abode.
Athough not a professed Christian or church member, Dr. Applegate affiliated closely with the Christian, or Disciple Church and lived a life illuminated with the faith precepts of the Great Teacher, whom he ??????.
