KILLED IN RUNAWAY
Mrs. Lonnie Redd Dies Near Aiken When She Leaped from Buggy
Aiken, May 21. - Jumping from a buggy when the horse her husband was driving early this afternoon became frightened and ran away, Mrs. Lonnie Redd, who lives near Aiken, was instantly killed. Her head struck the ground and her neck was broken. Mrs. Redd had been to Aiken with her husband and when their shopping was done they started to return home. Just below the city they passed a friend in another buggy and playfully Mr. Redd struck at him with the buggy whip. Mr. Reed's horse became frightened at the swish of the whip and started to run. Mr. Redd was unable to control the animal for the reason that the bridle bits broke. He told Mrs. Redd to jump, and as she did so she was thrown heavily to the ground. Death was instantaneous. The accident occurred on the Montmorenci road, two miles from the city, about 1 o'clock.
It was at first reported that an automobile frightened the horse, but that was erroneous. Before her marriage to Mr. Redd, the dead woman, was Mrs. Hamp Woodward. Her first husband was killed by a train in 1908 between Aiken and Montmorenci, not far from where she met her tragic death this afternoon.
