David Little came to the United States in 1834, living in Philadelphia for four years. There he married Elizabeth Wiltshire, a native of England, on 24 June 1838. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to Preemption, Mercer County, Illinois.

According to the obituary published at the time of his death, he was "a loyal and patriotic citizen, ever devoted to the best interests of his country, honest in all his dealings, pure in his conversation and life, a pattern to the young. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in his youth, a faithful member to death, a liberal supporter of the church and other benevolent causes."

The Preemption Methodist Episcopal church was built on a corner of the Little land. It was organized by David and Elizabeth Little and three other residents of the community. First church services were held in the Clarke home across the road from the Little farm residence.
