DEATH COMES TO MRS SHERMAN AT MIDNIGHT HOUR

Mrs John Sherman, sixty-two years old, died unexpectedly at midnight last night at her home, 177 East King Street. Death was due to heart failure.

Mrs Sherman had not been in usual health when she retired last night. At midnight, members of the family went to her bed to make inquiry relative to her condition and the discovery was made that she had passed away.

Mrs Sherman was a native of Ireland. When still a young girl, her parents came to America and settled at Eyota. There she was married to John Sherman and they came to this city.

There are four children, Miss Edith Sherman, a teacher in the city schools, Fred and William Sherman, associated with their father in the plumbing business; and Reverend Father J.P. Sherman, pastor of the Cathedral of Winona.

No arrangements for the services have been made.

The obsequies for Mrs John Sherman were held in the St Thomas Cathedral at 9 o'clock Monday morning. A solemn requiem mass was sung by her son, Rev. J.P. Sherman, assisted by Rev. F.M. Kelly. In the sanctuary were Rev. J.E. Grabowski, Rev. J. Haun, Rev. F. O'Brien, Rev. V.A. Duda, Rev. J. Koch, Rev. J. Misiak and Rev. A.L. Greevy. The occasion was graced by the presence of the Rt. Rev. Bishop Heffron, who delivered a touching panegyric on the life of the deceased. He declared her to be an ideal, Christian woman of whom it is necessary to say little. The fragrance of her sweet and gentle life will always remain in the hearts of those who love her. The bishop concluded with words of consolation, saying that a Christian funeral is only bidding farewell until that future reunion when joy will nevermore be dimmed by dread of separation.

That Mrs Sherman was esteemed and admired by many was sincerely attested by the numerous attendance of relatives, friends, and the students of Cotter and Cathedral high schools. But her success in life is most clearly shown by the splendid children she leaves behind; one, Rev. J.P. Sherman, given to the service of God, two other progressive and God-fearing sons, Fred and William, and one daughter, Edith, the constant companion of her mother to whom she was most devoted. To her husband, she was an unfailing source of love and cheer and a companion upon whom he could always rely. Her loss is so hard to bear because so unexpected and so keen.

Our hearts go out in sympathy to this bereaved family and we bid them be mindful of the words of the bishop's address, that parting in this life is only saying farewell for a time, then a happy reunion forever.

"O spotless woman in a world of shame
Go back to God as white as you came
The kindliest warrior known."

The out-of-town relatives and friends at the funeral were: Mrs James Joyce, Mrs Thomas O'Connor, Martin Joyce, William Joyce, Leon Joyce, and James Joyce, Jr., all of Stewartville, MN, Dr George T Joyce and wife of Rochester, MN, Mrs Edward O'Brien of Slayton, Miss Frances and Vernie Nevin of Fulda, MN, Mrs Charles McCarron and William McCarron of St Paul, MN, Mrs Hubert Brewer, Mrs George Leete of Kensel, ND, Miss Mia Hayes, Milwaukee, Miss Loretta Donnelly, Chicago.
