HARLINGEN, TX.- Alberto (Beto) Gonzales, Jr. 66, of Harlingen, TX passed away and went home to be with the Lord, on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.
Alberto was born on April 2, 1946, the only child to Alberto Gonzales, Sr. and Olivia Rosales Gonzales in Harlingen. As a small child, his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he graduated from Bloom Township High School in 1967.
After high school he moved back to the Valley where he worked for the Rio Grande Valley Gas Company for 35 years. Inspired by his Uncle Andres Gonzales, who served during WWII, he joined the Army Reserves in 1973. He remained a reservist for 7 years, ready to serve in the event his country needed him.
In 1972, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Canales Gonzales who survives him and they were married for 40 years. During that time they had their one and only daughter, Lucy Jeannette (Eliseo III) Gonzales-Gonzales, who is left to cherish his memories along with his grandson, Nehemiah Luke Gonzales; his mother Olivia R. Gonzales and numerous cousins.
He is preceded in death by his father, Alberto Gonzales, Sr. and his cousin, Diana Rosales.
Alberto was a loving man who devoted his life to his wife and daughter by providing, caring and protecting them always. As a young man he was affectionately called ``Betito' by his family; and was a big brother to his many cousins. As a friend, he was known as Albert or Beto, always ready to tell a good joke or give good advice.
To his only grandson he was known as Grandpa Hunter. Always strong even until the very end, Alberto will be greatly missed and never forgotten. His legacy will live on; his values passed down; and his perseverance and will to live was an inspiration to many
As a veteran, he believed ``Only two people have ever offered to die for you. One was Jesus Christ and the other is the American GI. One died for your soul, the other for you freedom.'
Visitation will be held today (Friday) from 10am to 9pm with a holy rosary to be prayed at 7pm.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 1, 2012 departing at 12:30 pm for a 1pm service at Queen of Peace Catholic Church and interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery Circle of Honor under the auspices of the American Legion Post #205.
Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.
