American Civil war veteran. On January 2, 1864, Sylvester, age 19, enlisted at Prattsburgh, NY, to fight in the Civil War. He mustered in as a private with Company A of the 2nd New York Mounted Rifles Regiment. He was soon transferred to Company M of the same Regiment. He was discharged February 2, 1865, at Elmira, NY, due to illness.

The 2nd regiment left New York State in March, 1864, and served as infantry at and near Washington, D. C., in 22d Corps; in the Provisional Brigade, 1st Division, 9th Corps, from May 15, 1864; in 1st Brigade, 2d Division, 9th Corps, Army of Potomac, from June 11, 1864; in the 2d Brigade, 2d Division, 9th Corps, from September, 1864; mounted in the 3d Brigade, 2d Division, Cavalry, Army of Potomac, from November 16, 1864; in Department of Virginia, from May, 1865. Commanded by Lt. Col. Joseph H. Wood, the 2nd Regiment lost by death, killed in action, 7 officers, 67 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 2 officers, 29 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 1 officer, 112 enlisted men.

In 1883 Sylvester was granted a veteran's pension of $6 per month and $994 in arrears.

Sylvester married Mary Hunt of Hunt Hollow on 9 Nov 1865 at Naples, NY. They had seven children, five of whom reached adulthood.

Sometime between 1870 and 1875, Sylvester and Mary lived in the state of Michigan. He had relatives (Piersons) living at Montcalm County, Michigan and his wife had relatives living at Livingston County, Michigan. It is unknown where Sylvester and Mary resided in Michigan. The Naples Record of 20 Feb 1875, recorded an announcement that welcomed Sylvester back to the Naples area after having resided at Michigan.

"Italy Hollow - Sheldon Fisher is moving beyond Bloods [Atlanta]. He has let his farm to his brother, Sylvester." (March 31, 1877, The Naples Record)

"Samuel J. Fisher has purchased the large Bailey farm in Springwater valley, consideration $6000. Mr. Fisher and his son Purlee will remove to this farm in the spring. The purchaser has already been offered $2000 for his bargain." (From the Jan. 9, 1889 edition of the Naples Record of Ontario, NY)

"In Surrogate's court since our last report: Silvester C. Fisher is administrator of the $2,600 estate of Samuel J. Fisher of Wayland.:" (Steuben Advocate, 21 Feb 1899)

"Clark Avery of Prattsburg has bought the Sylvester Fisher farm, consisting of sixty-four acres to add to his farm of forty acres." (Steuben Courier, 24 March 1899)

"Sylvester Fisher was returning from Bloods one evening last week driving a spirited team when he unexpectedly met Mr. Hiler's traction engine and runaway ensued. Mr. Fisher was thrown out, the horses broke loose from the wagon and were found with one on its back entangled in the harness. Mr. Fisher and the horses escaped unharmed." "Wayland - Sylvester C. Fisher died at his home on Lackawanna Avenue last Monday morning, the cause of his death being heart failure. He was 70 years of age. He has been a resident of Wayland for about fifteen years, coming here from Springwater. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. McGrady of Clifton Springs, three sons George and Purley of Springwater, and William of this village. The funeral services were held,at the house Thursday at 2 o'clock, Rev. Henry H. Witham officiating. Interment in village cemetery." (Cohocton Valley Times, 21 September 1914)

"Wayland - Sylvester Fisher died at his home on Lackawanna Avenue, last Monday morning. He had been in poor health for the past four years. He was 70 years of age. He moved from Springwater to this village about fifteen years ago. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. McGrady of Clifford Springs, and three sons, George and Purdy [sic] of Springwater and William of this village. The funeral was held at the house, Thursday at 2 o'clock, Rev. Henry H. Witham officiating. Interment in the Wayland cemetery. He was a member of the Wayland G. A. R., which attended the funeral."
