Gertrude was born on January 4, 1909, the daughter of Robert and Ann (Vogler) Bauer. She was born and raised in the town of Lima, Pepin County, rural Durand. She married Charles Boigenzahn on October 5, 1929, at Lima. After marriage they lived mostly in the Durand area. They have lived in the city of Durand since 1948. Her husband, Charles, passed away May 6, 1977. Gertrude has been a resident of the care center in Durand since March 23, 2004, following surgery. Gertie was a very active lady. She did babysitting, house and office cleaning, and church work. She was a member of the senior citizens band. She helped instigate the Meals on Wheels program in Durand and remained active in the program for 30 years.
She is survived by one daughter, Orvilla (Elmer) Bechel of Sparta; two sons, Charles Jr. (Mary) of Blaine, Minn., and James (Beckie) of New Brighton, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; two sisters, Racy Simon and Mary Becker; two brothers, Richard and Herman Bauer.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2004, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church-Lima, rural Durand. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Durand.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday.
