Myron C. Merriman, the well-known and prominent business man of this city; died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his home, No. 703 West Genesee street. … In the death of Mr. Merriman Syracuse looses one of the men who helped to make the city, and one who will long be remembered for the part he played in opening up one of the largest tracts in the city. When Mr. Merriman came to Syracuse from Skaneateles in 1848, the city had just been incorporated, with a population of about 12,000. Mr. Merriman became interest in real estate, and in 18XX purchased a farm of fifty acres in what was then the Fifth ward. … afterward renamed by the residents Merriman avenue. …

He was born in Elbridge on January 17th, 1819. His family came from New Haven, Conn. And settled in Eagle village, near Manius. Mr. Merriman's father was Judge Charles Johnson Merriman, a Circuit court Judge, of Elbridge, … studied law … During the last two years death has been a frequent visitor in the Merriman family. In November, 1899 his wife, whom he married in 1838 died. In the following March his son Myron C. Merriman, Jr., died and the next month his son's widow died. Last December his only daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Breese, wife of Dr. Arthur Breese died. In January of this year his brother, Charles J. Merriman of Elbridge, passed away. Mr. Merriman is survived by four grandchildren, Myron Cowles Merriman, Rapley Peek Merriman, Arthur Breese Merriman and Leila Chaffee Merriman. The deceased is also survived by a brother and two sisters, Dwight Merriman of Jackson, Mich., Mrs. Calists Mason of Auburn and Mrs. Mason of Attica. … burial will be made in the family plot in Oakwood cemetery.
