Chicago Ald. Lemuel Austin Jr. (34th), an important ally to Mayor Richard Daley in the City Council and the minority community, died Saturday in Roseland Community Hospital of a heart attack he suffered a day earlier.
Ald. Austin, 48, chairman of the Budget Committee and Democratic committeeman for his ward, was a member of the City Council since 1987 and was elected by the Cook County Central Committee in March as Chicago Democratic Party vice chairman.
Ald. Austin was taken to the Roseland emergency room in full cardiac arrest Friday afternoon after suffering the attack in his Far South Side home. He remained in critical condition until his death 24 hours later.
The mayor said he was "shocked and saddened" by the death of Ald. Austin, whom he praised as "one of the great leaders in the Chicago City Council."
"Ald. Austin has been both a friend and ally to me in the City Council," Daley said in a prepared statement. "Since becoming chairman of the Budget Committee, he has carried out the duties of that position with fairness, good judgment and in the best interest of all citizens. He will be missed."
State Senate Minority Leader Emil Jones Jr. (D-Chicago), a fellow member of the 34th Ward Democratic organization, said: "He was truly a hard-working public servant, and his leadership of the City Council's Budget Committee is sure to be missed."
A graduate of Harrison High School who later attended Richard J. Daley City College, Ald. Austin joined the 34th Ward organization in the early 1970s and became a ward superintendent for the city's Department of Streets and Sanitation in 1981.
He was a protege of former Ald. Wilson Frost, now a commissioner on the Cook County Board of (tax) Appeals.
Ald. Austin first ran for alderman in 1987 after Frost resigned to join the appeals board, and he won the endorsement of then-Mayor Harold Washington in that race.
Ald. Austin is survived by his wife, Carrie (nee Battle); six children, Lemuel III, Deneen, Kenneth Lemuel, Fatrice, Lemuetta and Lemuel IV; seven grandchildren; two brothers; and a sister. Funeral arrangements were pending.
