One of the now famous "Monuments Men", artists and art curators that joined the American and British Armies during World War II, using their knowledge and expertise to help find, save and recover the thousands of pieces of art stolen by the Nazis throughout Europe.

He was the curator of the education department of National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

In early 1945 he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army, and was assigned to the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives section. He assisted in finding and recovering hundreds of works of art, many from German dictator Adolph Hitler's Berchtesgaden, Bavaria mountain estate.

He was one of the member of the MFAA that were awarded the Legion of Honor by the French for their efforts.

The achievements of the "Monuments Men" were portrayed in the 2014 motion picture of the same name.
