William Monberg, 96, of Superior, died Friday, Nov 23, 2012 at Essentia Health-St Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born March 17, 1916 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, son of John and Ane (Pedersen) Monberg.

Bill proudly served his country with the US Army in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was decorated with the WWII Victory Medal with two Overseas Bars, the Battle Star and the Philipine Liberation Ribbon. He later joined the VFW and the American Legion and was on the first Honor Flight to Washington DC from Duluth.

As a machinist, Bill worked for the NP, GN/BN and DW&P railroads and retired from Superior Lidgerwood Mundy. Bill served as president of the local Machinists Union. Some of his interests included upholstery, woodworking, painting, wine-making cooking and spending time at the family cabin on Sand Lake in the Town of Barnes.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Helen M (Nygren) in 1993; grandson, Brian Monberg; brothers, Gunnar, Holgar, Joseph and Howard Monberg; and sisters, Hancene Johnson and Myrtle Johnson.

Survivors are his daughter, sons, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial with military rites accorded by the Richard I Bong American Legion Post 435 will be at Graceland Cemetery.
