Member of Parliament and a colonial investor like his uncle John Popham, although his greatest achievement was as an antiquary. Much of his manuscript collection was lost when his homes, Colcombe Castle and Shute House, were damaged during the English Civil War, but his remaining genealogical, heraldic, and historical research became the source material for other historians, including Tristram Risdon and John Prince.
