MISSOULA – Clarence Paul Stephens passed away at his Missoula home on Tuesday morning, Nov. 20, 2012.

Clarence was born in Twin Bridges on Jan. 15, 1922, to Elvis and Theodoshia (Stark) Stephens. He grew up on the family ranch and graduated from high school in 1940. He heard the gospel of Christ early in life and it became his truest source of satisfaction for the remainder of his life.

Clarence enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on June 25, 1945. Having a particular aptitude for shooting, he was assigned to be a rifle instructor and served his entire enlistment stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif. In August 1946, he received an honorable discharge and returned to Montana to attend business school and become an accountant.

In March 1948, Clarence married Marian Davis in Portland, Ore. In 1950, they moved to Dillon where their daughter was born, and then to Missoula in 1955. He was an accountant for several auto dealerships and small business owners there until 1976.

Clarence was an avid reader, enjoyed piloting his private plane, and loved stream fishing with his good friend and business partner Lloyd Willumsen. Their two families enjoyed camping and boating together during the summers as well.

In 1977, Marian and Clarence bought a Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream franchise. They operated stores in Kennewick, Wash., and Nampa, Idaho. Being an ice cream man was a good fit for him. He continued to make himself milkshakes daily for the rest of his life.

When they officially retired in 1985, Clarence and Marian returned to Montana to live.

Just prior to their 62nd wedding anniversary, Marian, the love of his life, passed away on Dec. 24, 2009. Clarence was also preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Walter; his brother, Grant; and just three weeks ago, his sister, Myrna.

Clarence is survived by his daughter, Brenda Binney (Jon); granddaughter Kristen Baker (Dylan Dickinson); grandsons, Stephen and Bryce Baker (Jadra), Trevor, Marc and Andrew Binney; great-granddaughter Claira Baker, as well as 10 nieces and nephews.

Clarence was well respected and loved by his entire family and many who knew him and will be missed very much.

In lieu of flowers, the family believes Clarence would encourage donations to your public library or other favorite family charity.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 7405 Mullan Rd. in Missoula.
