He attended Attucks Elementary School, R.T. Coles Jr. High School, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1948. After graduation, he immediately joined the U.S. Navy where he served our country abroad and stateside and was honorably discharged.
In the 1960s, he moved to Hawaii and was employed by Jorgenson Steel Company before retiring in 1994 after 25 years of service.
He moved to Kansas City in 1978 to assist with his ailing mother and was introduced to Icy (Frison Deans) Gines by his daughter, Linda Smith. They married in September 1979 and were married for 31 years.
He joined Wright Memorial Church of God in Christ on Oct. 25, 1981, and over the years served as trustee, ordained deacon, assistant Sunday School superintendent, V.M. Barker Usher Board president, and Missouri Western Jurisdiction Sunday School treasurer under two administrations.
On Dec. 26, 2010, he was honored with the dedication of the Alfred E. Gines Memorial Library for more than 25 years of service as head deacon, Sunday School superintendent and Board of Trustees chairman at Wright Memorial C.O.G.I.C.
He was the father of four biological children, Linda Smith (Glen), A. Eugene Gines, Jr. (Felicia), William Gines, and Althea Armstrong (deceased).
He was also the father of three daughters by marriage, Pamela Hill (deceased), Alinda Murphy and Joan Deans.
He was preceded by brothers; Richard, and Perry, and sister, Grace.
Surviving are two sisters, Lillian Manson (Harold) and Delorise Gines, and one brother, Kenneth Gines, as well as 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.
