A GOOD MOTHER PASSES

Emma B. Gregg Was One Of The Real Pioneers of Kansas, Was ever Cheerful and Happy

Emma Broomhall Gregg, of English Parentage, was born in Guernsey county, Ohio 1840. When a child she moved with her family by boat down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi river to Madison, Iowa. The family came to Leroy, Coffey County, Kansas, in 1858, where they settled. She was married the same year in Leroy to Oliver Howard Gregg. In 1860 they moved to Olathe and in 1879 to Burlington. The father died in 1885 at Burlington and Mrs. Gregg came to Emporia in 1895 and made her home with her son George Howard Gregg. She had made her home with him ever since that time. Mrs. Gregg died at his home at Oil Hill near El Dorado, Kansas last Wednesday evening July 14th. Almost three years ago Mrs. Gregg broke her hip and was unable to walk after that accident. She did not suffer and beside from being unable to walk, has been in very good health. She was 86 years old last February.

Appropriate funeral services were held Friday morning at 10 o'clock at the funeral Chapel in El Dorado. The Rev. McNeil, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Oil Hill, conducted the service. Mrs Gregg had long been a member of the Presbyterian Church. After the service the body was brought to Emporia by motor, and the interment was made in Maplewood Cemetery. Fredrick Case Gregg and son Eldo Horton Gregg of Emporia attended the funeral in El Dorado and accompanied the funeral party here. Mr. & Mrs. George Howard Gregg and little son Harold of Oil Hill also came to Emporia.

Mrs. Gregg is survived by the following sons: Frank Broomhall Gregg Eureka; George H. Gregg Oil Hill, Fred C. Gregg Emporia and Chester H. Gregg Texas. She is also survived by one brother Jacob Trahern of Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Gregg was an unusually splendid type women and she leaves as a lasting memorial her splendid family of sons. She endured and experienced all of the hardships and privations that were known by the early settlers and pioneers. When Mr. & Mrs Gregg came to Kansas they crossed the Marais des Cygnes river at Ottawa, on a ferry boat, Indians at that place taking them across. Ottawa at that time had only one log building. After locating in Kansas they endured ague chills, deaths, crop failures and always small finances, but ever Mrs. Gregg was sweet, happy and "kept the faith" until the last. And so, another good Mother passes.
