James Phillip Kelly, son of Dennis and Katherine (Sullivan) Kelly, was born November 4, 1897, on the Kelly homestead eight miles south of Exeter.

He passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital, Geneva, at the age of 82 years, six months and 20 days.

Jim was one of a family of eight children, having four brothers and three sisters, all of whom preceded him in death, except one brother, Leo of Exeter.

He attended school at District 6, St. Stephen's parochial school and a Catholic academy in Kansas.

Jim joined his father in farming on the family farm southeast of Exeter where most of his life was spent. As a young man, he was united in marriage to Stella Becker, who passed away seven weeks ago on April 4, 1980.

To this union 10 children were born; two sons, Charles Patrick and John Thomas died in infancy. Survivors are sons, Rex J., Holdrege, E.D., Lincoln and James D., Exeter; daughters, Mrs. Dean (Cleo) Robare, Mrs. James (Colleen) Blessing, Mrs. James (Kathleen) Rupert, all of Lincoln, Mrs. Arnold (Marion) Geiger, Fairmont, and Mrs. Caroline K. Hiett, Exeter; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. and Mrs. Kelly spent most of their married life in the Exeter community with the exception of 18 years when they lived in Lincoln. Reaching retirement age, they returned to Exeter in 1971 where they have lived since.

He will be remembered by his family as a man of deep faith and compassion, devoted to home and family as well as having a keen interest in the welfare of the community, state and country.

Funeral mass was held at St. Stephen's Church Tuesday, May 27, at 10 a.m. with Msgr. H.H. Ingenhorst officiating. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Jay Geiger, Dan Kelly, John T. Kelly, Randy Kelly, Thomas E. Kelly and great-nephew, John Volkmer.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe Brown, Anton Biba, Harve J. Johnson and Earl Manning.
