1871 Korean Campaign Medal of Honor Recipient. Served as a Landsman in the United States Navy. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in Korea on June 9 and 10, 1871. His citation reads “Served with Company D during the capture of the Korean forts. Fighting the enemy inside the fort, Lukes received a severe cut over the head”. He was one of 15 United States Sailors and Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor for this little-known action. His Medal was awarded to him on October 10, 1872.
