SUPERIOR – Sharon Ann Moran, 73, of Superior, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at her home with her family by her side.

Sharon was born Sept. 23, 1939, in the North Dakota prairie town of Hebron to Ernest and Hedwig Spoer. She grew up on a family farm, where she worked with her three sisters to sustain a self-sufficient lifestyle that her parents felt was vital to their daughters' education and growth.

There, she developed a strong work ethic, an undying love for her family and a strong bond to all things living. Farm animals, as well as family pets, all had a special place in her heart. All were viewed by her as God's creatures, and in need of her special care.

She developed friends easily growing up, despite the distances between the small family farms. Raiding watermelon patches at night with her sisters and friends, was one of the highlights of her early childhood. Sometimes, they even raided her own, when time didn't permit a long trip across the prairie to a neighboring farm. Sharon would say that she didn't realize until much later, that her parents, as well as the neighbors, purposely planted their watermelons far from the "real" gardens as they expected the kids to raid them. Video games were in short supply in those days.

Sharon attended high school in Hebron, N.D., where she stayed in a dorm with the other students. Winter travel between the farms and town was too difficult and dangerous to attempt on a daily basis. Here, she learned self-sufficiency at an early age. Here, too, is where she developed her love of teaching.

Ernest and Hedwig found a way to send her to college to pursue her teaching passion. She attended Dickinson College and embarked on a teaching career that started at a country school and would touch many lives over the next 50 years. The latest of which were well after her retirement.

She met and married Jerry Moran on Dec. 29, 1962. Together, they moved to Superior and parented five children between 1963 and 1980. Sharon not only loved children in her classroom, but in her home as well.

Sharon balanced her time between teaching several generations of students and providing a loving home for her husband and children. She felt a personal need to solve every problem for anyone she thought was in need. Even after her diagnoses of cancer, she continued to work to tie up all the loose ends for those she wanted to help before she was physically unable to function anymore.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Hedwig Spoer; sister, Carrol Oldenberg; and infant sister, Hedwig.

Those remaining to share her memory include her husband, Jerry Moran; children, Charlotte (Lee) Billing, Steve (Diane) Moran, Veronica (Charles) Amarikwa, Patricia (Shaun) McCabe and Christopher Moran; nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace Martin and Dora (Larry) Jaeger.

A vigil with her ashes will be held at St. Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Superior on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the same location to celebrate the wonderful contributions to all the lives that she touched during her time on this earth.

We will all miss you very much, Mom, and look forward to seeing you again in a better place.
