The inscription incorrectly states that he was 109 at his death. He actually was 108, because his birthday had not yet occurred that year. The newspaper obit is correct.
There are a few places where his surname is misspelled, which might have been incorrect in the source. As indicated on the gravestone, there is no letter "c" in Altshuler.
Thanks.

I have transcribed the following article about Mr. Altshuler, as it appeared in the Oakland Tribune. His name was Levi, not Louis and Altshuler, not Altschuler. Please add it to his memorial. Thanks, Ruth

DEATH CLAIMS '49ER, AGED 108

Louis Altschuler, one of California's few remaining '49ers, and believed the oldest man ever to have crossed the new Bay Bridge, died today at San Francisco's St. Francis Hospital, aged 108.
Since the "big shake" of 1906 destroyed his clothing establishment in San Francisco, Altschuler had lived with his grandson, M. H. Herspring, now a deputy city milk inspector, at 1587 Pacific Avenue, Alameda.
Herspring drove the aged pioneer across the bridge last New Year's eve, with other members of the family, and his grandfather chuckled, "It's the grandest sight I've ever seen!"
Born in Koenigsberg, Germany Altschuler ran away from home as a boy and a "windjammer" bore him to America. He sailed around the Horn and reached California in 1849, at the beginning of the gold rush, but trade and not gold-seeking was his ambition, so he established a clothing store at 2195 Sacramento Street.
Ill health had increased gradually since his retirement from business. Early this morning his heart failed.
Three daughter and two sons survive him. They are Mrs. Henrietta Herspring of Alameda, Mrs. Josephine Wilson of Oakland, and Miss Annette Altschuler of San Francisco; Cass A. Altschuler of Berkeley and Samuel Altschuler of San Francisco.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning in San Francisco.
