Roy J. Atchley, 88, was co-owner of the Crafton Dairy and real estate broker for Lois Lauer Realty died Sunday at Mission Commons.

Roy was born February 17, 1924 in San Bernardino. His parents, Thomas York Atchley and Kate Clem Atchley moved to Colton and Thomas worked for Portland Cement Company. Roy had two brothers and one sister that preceded him in death, Robert, Harvey and Katherine Lewis.

Roy attended Lincoln Elementary School in Colton and graduated from Colton High in 1941. He joined the mechanic apprentice program in San Diego working for San Diego Consolidated as a flight engineer-mechanic. This company manufactured PBY's and B-24 Liberator bombers for the war effort. He flew as an observer for pilots receiving instrument training all over the southwest. Roy attended the Aviation Cadet Center at Perrin Field, Texas as part of the Army Air Corp.

With the end of the war, Roy was transferred to the San Bernardino Air Depot and performed flight tests there until August 1947. He met Ann Buoye at the Urbita Springs Ballroom and they were married November 22, 1947. They lived at the Lehman's Apartments in Mentone and Roy became a lineman for Southern California Edison working in Redlands and Mentone. Ann died in 2009.

In 1953, Roy became co-owner of Crafton Dairy with Joseph Buoye and later Tom Buoye. The dairy was located on East Citrus Avenue and served Redlands, Mentone, Highland, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, Palm Springs and the mountain summer camps of Barton Flats. Roy sold his share of the dairy in 1977.

Roy received a real estate broker's license and worked for the real estate firms of Kivett, Ray Alexander and later became the office manager of Louis Lauer Realty in Yucaipa. He retired from Lois Lauer in 1987.

Ann and Roy traveled extensively upon retirement. He was a proud owner of a Model "A" Ford and joined the Paradise Valley Model A Club traveling on club adventures and participating in many parades. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Yucaipa Kiwanis, past president. Roy was a director of the San Bernardino Dairymen's Association.
