Edgar Lee Sutton, 87, died at Grace Living Center, Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, in Stillwater. Graveside services will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Richard Poe will officiate. Services are under the direction of Colonial Chapel Funeral Home.
Sutton was born in Fredericktown, Mo., June 17, 1913, to Joseph Andrew Jackson Sutton and Mary Elizabeth Duncan) Sutton.On April 6, 1934, Sutton married Hazel Ona (Pearce) Sutton in Guthrie.
He attended Central State University in Edmond. In 1936, they moved to Stillwater where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and later held the position of Assistant Postmaster.
Edgar was a very active person in the community and was known for his ability to quote the scriptures as he had a great respect for the Lord and love of his church family. He was a member of the Church of Christ where he served as a teacher, Deacon and Elder for many years.
Sutton served as a Sea Bee and in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1943 to 1946 and became a life member of Disabled Veterans.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Hazel, who died Oct. 28, 1994, and his only brother, Robert Sutton, Oklahoma City.
Sutton is survived by two sons, Jerry Lee Sutton and wife Vera, Stillwater; Timothy Keith Sutton and wife Kaye, Tulsa; one daughter, Billie Charlene Rogers and husband Stearns, Lake Charles, La.; one sister, Margaret Sutton Hadden, Oklahoma City; eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
Pallbearers will be John Rodgers, Winston King, Milton Wells, Billy Tucker, Michael Sutton and Bobby Jacomine.
The family has named the American Cancer Society, 6440 S. Lewis, Suite 100, Tulsa, OK 74136 and the Church of Christ, 821 North Duck, Stillwater 74074 as memorial recipients.
