Although she was born in Atlanta, Georgia, Agnes Martin Hunter's family moved to the newly planned community of Hilton Village in Warwick County, Virginia during World
War I.
Agnes attended the new Hilton Elementary and graduated from Morrison (later Warwick) High School in 1928. Next, she trained at the Elizabeth Buxton Hospital School of Nursing in Newport News becoming a "Scrub" (Operating Room) nurse at that hospital.
At Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, on April 24, 1934, Agnes married Oscar Jerome "Jerry" Brittingham, Jr. on his parents' 39th wedding anniversary. They had 6 children (?3 daughters & 3 sons):
- Agnes Martin "Marty" Brittingham (1935-2009)
- Oscar Jerome "Jerry" Brittingham III (1938-2014)

- Susan (Brittingham) Saunders (1948-2010)

Until their 2nd child (later referred to as "No. 1 son") was born, she continued as a "Scrub" nurse. At that time, they moved to the new neighborhood of Brandon Heights, which is adjacent to Hilton Village.
They lived in Brandon Heights, on Shirley Road, until their deaths in 1985. During that time, she was Head of the Altar Guild at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church and a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). She was the Regent of the Newport News Chapter, 1965-1968. Col. John Carlyle of Alexandria, Virginia is her Patriot Ancestor.
Two of her preferred pastimes were sewing and baking. “Sewing” is not a proper description, though, since she was a seamstress and tailor par excellence. In her list of accomplishments were ladies’ suits with matching hats, long brocade evening dress with matching jacket, mens’ sport coats, christening dresses, smocked dresses, on and on! A few of her family-and-crowd-pleasing baked goodies were white fruit cake, coconut cake, and lemon meringue pie.
