Obituary from newspaper
Frank J. Vonachen, a well known citizen of Peoria, died yesterday afternoon of consumption, after a lingering illness of two years, the latter part of which he was confined to the house. He was born in Alsace near Strasbourg, December 25, 1833. He came to this country in 1853 and worked three years in New York. Then he came west and settled in Peoria. He was appointed on the police force and locally was elected city marshal, which position he held on term. He was one of the most efficient heads of the police that the city has ever had. At the conclusion of his term he bought the saloon on the corner of Bridge and Washington streets, where he remained until two years ago, when he erected a fine brick building opposite, where he resided until the day of his death. He was a member of fire company No. 4 since its organization, and also a member of Lodge No. 8, United Order of Ancient Druids, and the Arbeiver Verein. He was twice married, first to Wilhelmina Kellerstrass, by whom he had five children. His oldest son – Frank – has just graduated at the college of pharmacy in Philadelphia. The funeral will take place from the residence on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. Vonachen was a brave, honest man, and highly esteemed by those who knew him ever since he was chosen on the police, and never knew him to swerve in the least from the path of integrity.
