3 July 1930 - West Branch Times

Alva M. Larue was born at Springdale, Iowa, Feb. 9, 1861, and passed away at his home south of West Branch June 24, 1930, aged 69 years, 4 months and 15 days. He was the son of Cyrus Larue and Sarah Jane Burnett Larue, and has lived for thirty-one years near West Branch. The early part of his life was spent in the Pedee neighborhood.

He was married May 5, 1897, to Melissa Martin. To this union no children were born, but in their home they reared two nieces and a nephew, Mrs. Clarence Roegle, Mrs. Lissa Larue and Bert Martin, giving the same care and love which would have been the heritage of children of their own.

Mr. Larue was a well known farmer, taking an active part in the affairs of the community in which he lived. He served for many years on the school board at Prairie Knoll, being repeatedly elected president of the board, and having always a close personal interest in the school. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant church at Downey, having united many years ago. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge.

His death came suddenly, after an illness of only a few hours, and the community unites in sympathy to the bereaved family. Surviving are his wife, three sisters and four brothers: Wm. Larue of Michigan, John Larue of Garber, Mo., Ross Larue of Gull Lake, Canada, Earl Larue of Menlo. Mrs. Nan Burnett of Austin, Minn., Mrs. Sade Atkins of Menlo, Mrs. Nora Elzey of Marshalltown; the three children who were raised in his home, Mrs. Roegle, Mrs. Larue and Bert Martin. Two brothers died in infancy and another brother, Andy Larue, who was a prominent Cedar county farmer, died a few years ago.

Funeral services were held at ten o'clock Thursday morning at the Methodist church at West Branch, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. D. Green, and Eureka Lodge, I.O.O.F. of Iowa City. Burial was made in the West Branch cemetery.
