Wife of Flenor M. Heath, daughter of Civil War veteran Joshua Bell Freeman and Docia Grider. Each of her parents were widowed and had grown children from prior marriage. Family lived in Greenwood and ran a general store at a time when the town had no roads, only footpaths. All the houses faced the railroad.

Attended Eastern Teachers College, now Eastern Kentucky University. First job was teaching at Pine Knot (Ky) school, where she taught Latin (which she had never studied) among other classes. School system provided her a horse for transportation.

Nannie had a grapefruit-sized tumor removed from her abdomen as a young woman, and remained cancer-free the rest of her life. She lived to be 91, same age attained by her mother.

Flenor and Nannie had only one child, Wilda.
