James M. Winters was born on June 1, 1830, in Giles County, Tennessee. He was the son of William Carvin Winters and Lavina Bridges Winters. His family called him "Jim."

Jim married Amanda M. Davidson on August 25, 1850, in Montgomery County, Texas. The couple had four known children--Margaret Lavina (Mrs. John Wesley Crawford), born in 1854, Montgomery or Atascosa County; William Thomas, 1856, Guadalupe County; James Nathaniel, 1859, Atascosa County; and Jonathan W., 1861, Frio County.

Jim and Amanda's son Jonathan W. Wimbers died when he was 13 days old on May 13, 1861, in Atascosa County. His parents buried him in Brummett Cemetery.

Five months after the death of his son, Jim, 31, was killed by Indians on October 19, 1861, in Atascosa County, Texas. He was buried not far from his infant son in Brummett Cemetery. The widowed Amanda later married Tobias Long.
