James was the second of four children of Peter Davidson, a farmer, and Ann Davidson.

He was baptized on Jan. 4, 1820 in Birse, Aberdeenshire.

He married Charlotte Davidson (his distant cousin) on Dec. 9, 1843 in Lochlee, Forfarshire (now Angus).

They had nine children: Jean/Jane about 1844, Ann in 1845, Charles about 1848, Mary Ann about 1850, David Mitchell about 1852, Catherine B. in 1856, Gordon in 1859, William Burness in 1861 and Helen in 1865.

He was a wood sawyer.

He died at the Royal Aberdeen Infirmary, St. Nicholas, Aberdeenshire of heart disease, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
