One Dead, One Missing After Boat Mishap
BARLOW, Ky., March 26 One man is dead and another is presumed to have drowned following the capsizing of a fishing boat in Ohio River backwater late Wednesday.
A third occupant of the boat suffered exposure and shock during a five-hour Interval before rescuers came.
The victims:
David Donald Dennis, 33, Barlow. A coroner's Jury today ruled bis death to be accidental due to shock and exposure.
Jerry Baker, about 30, Barlow. He has been missing since Wednesday night not long after he started to swim to safety and for help.
Pete Dusch, 35, Barlow. He suffered from shock and exposure during the long ordeal until help came.
State Trooper E. L. Fowler made this report:
The three men had attended to a fishing net some six miles east of Barlow and perhaps three to four miles from, the nearest land.
As they were returning to land, Dennis, who had been operating the boat, decided to yield the chore to one of the other two men. While the exchange was taking place, apparently at a time when all three men were on the same side of the boat, the craft capsized and the men were thrown into the water.
Swam Or Drifted
The men swam or drifted to an area of brush and trees about which is submerged, by backwater.
Dennis, reportedly hysterical from the accident and from exposure to the air and water after a cold front had moved in, was tied to a tree by one or both of his friends.
The time of the death of Dennis was not known. But he was dead when rescuers came to the scene just before 11 p.m., some five hours after the boat had turned over.
Sometime during the night, perhaps an hour before the body of Dennis and Dusch were found, Baker decided to try to swim for help. The water was swift and Baker apparently ran into difficulty, but he called to his companions a few minutes later that he had climbed on a tree log and was safe. Nothing further has been heard from Baker although authorities and volunteers have searched the area thoroughly.
During the night, Michael Alcock, and a brother of David Dennis went into the area to search for the three missing men. They passed near the location where Dennis and Busch had been waiting for help but, somehow, no contact was made between the men In the water and the men in the boat.
The boat continued on, Dennis and Dusch later were found by the men in the boat as the craft apparently was returning to the landing from where it came. Dusch and the body of Dennis were brought to shore. A thorough search was made in the area, but authorities assumed that Baker's body was hung in heavy brush and will not be found until the floodwater recedes.
