H.E. was known affectionely as "Babe" by family members and "Curly" by his friends amd professional acquaintances. He served as a machinist in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Barbara Speegle on June 29, 1948 in Putnam, Texas. They soon moved to Odessa where H.E. (Curly) worked in the oil industry for the rest of his adult life. He began his carreer on drilling rigs and later worked as a machinist for several Odessa companies. He was widely known for his ingenuity and inventiveness in finding creative solutions to complex problems.

He enjoyed both lisening to and playing music, was creative with his woodworking tools, and loved learning about new things. His sense of humor endeared him to many - especially his children and grandchildren, leaving them with so many fond memories of him.

He and Barbara have 6 children. Michael Eugene (1949-1951), Danny and wife Ann of Odessa, Tom and Elaine of Harrisonburg, Va, Peggy and Glen Nicks of Cisco, Doyle and Yvonne of Odessa, and Kelly and Joe Eggers of Alpharetta, Ga. He was the proud "Papa" of 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and neices who remember him with love and admiration. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Lucretia (Stephens). He has four brothers and seven sisters.

He was a longtime member of Belmont Baptist Church in Odessa where he was a deacon.
