A native of Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Fred McDowell and Biddie (Vehaun) Gregory.
A carman for Southern Railway with 42 years of service, he was a member of Hayne Baptist Church and a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II in the South Pacific.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bright Gregory of the home; a daughter, Jennie Lynn Dobson and her husband Dan of Duncan; two sisters, Doris Gregory of Spartanburg, and Virginia Murrell of Wilmington, NC; three brothers, Fred Gregory of Mooresville, NC, Lewis Gregory of Spartanburg, and Rev. Boyce Gregory of Spindale, NC; and two grandsons, Corey Dobson of Tampa, FL, and his fiancé Janna Graham, and Michael Dobson of Duncan.
He was predeceased by a son, Leslie Gregory; two brothers, Arthur Gregory and Jack Gregory; and three sisters, Thelma Brown, Mae Barton, and Laura Gerrell.
Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2003, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. John Lynch.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hayne Baptist Church, 7319 Valley Falls Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
