Dewitt passed away on December 26, 1887 in Van Buren County, Michigan. The cause of death was listed as paralysis, per his death record located in Book B Page 256.
Although there is no actual obituary in the Decatur newspaper, there is the following item in the local news, December 28, 1887:
"Dewitt C. Chapman, who lived on the old Sherburn farm, on the east valley road, died Sunday evening of paralysis of the stomach. Rev. R. Queal preaches the funeral to day and the burial will be in Almena."
A search was made of the cemetery records of the only two cemeteries in Almena Township, Almena and Covey Hill. Covey Hill had no Chapman listings. Almena Cemetery has eight Chapman listings, listed as the wife and children of D. C. Chapman, but he is not listed. The Local Historian of Van Buren District Library believes he is buried in Almena.
