Dewitt Clinton Chapman was born to Amos and Jane Chapman, according to his death certificate. He married Lydia Waite in New York, then moved to Litchfield, Hillsdale County, Michigan where they remained until 1847, at which time they moved to Van Buren County, where they passed the remainder of their lives, Lydia dying 11 October 1863. They were the parents of nine children.

Dewitt married Malinda Logan, to which union two children were born.

Celestia Hayden Swift and Dewitt were married in Van Buren County, Michigan on 25 October 1868. The two surviving children from his first marriage now were to have four more siblings. Celestia and De Witt added Arlo, Minnie, Freedus and Lillie to their family.

Dewitt passed away on December 26, 1887 in Van Buren County, Michigan. The cause of death was listed as paralysis, per his death record located in Book B Page 256.

Although there is no actual obituary in the Decatur newspaper, there is the following item in the local news, December 28, 1887:

"Dewitt C. Chapman, who lived on the old Sherburn farm, on the east valley road, died Sunday evening of paralysis of the stomach. Rev. R. Queal preaches the funeral to day and the burial will be in Almena."

A search was made of the cemetery records of the only two cemeteries in Almena Township, Almena and Covey Hill. Covey Hill had no Chapman listings. Almena Cemetery has eight Chapman listings, listed as the wife and children of D. C. Chapman, but he is not listed. The Local Historian of Van Buren District Library believes he is buried in Almena.
