Gail Smith married Terry Gaillard in the First Baptist Church of Auburn in June 1963. They were married 49 years and both lived in Auburn all their lives. Gail graduated from Auburn High School in 1961 and then went on to attend Auburn University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Pathology and then later a Master's degree in Psychometry. While at Auburn as an undergraduate, Gail was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority and later served as an advisor for the same chapter. Gail began her education career in the Auburn City school system. She later went to work as a Speech Pathologist and then as a School Psychomotrist for the Tallapoosa County school system where she spent 28 years. She retired in 2006.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother and she always placed her family needs ahead of her on. She never missed a baseball or football game or a gymnastics meet no matter where it was or how far she had to travel.
She loved Auburn football games and Atlanta Braves baseball games and spent many fall Saturdays watching the Tigers and many spring and summer nights watching the Braves. In her middle years, Gail found great love and satisfaction in exercise and, in particular, running. She became a competitive distance runner in her age class and competed in road races from Atlanta to Mobile. When the grand children came she became a doting, supporting, spoiling Gigi and greatly enjoyed that role! She was a proud, hard working, determined woman who never quit, found a way to succeed, held her head high and pushed her family to achieve their goals. She will be deeply missed by all her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Terry Gaillard, son Mark and his wife Heather of Alexandria, Virginia, daughter Lee Sides and her husband Ben of Auburn, Alabama and four grandchildren: Morgan and Mallory of Auburn, Al and John and Jenna Grace of Alexandria, VA, and her brother Doug Smith and his wife Lynda of Wetumpka, Alabama. The family will hold a private viewing and then a public internment service at Auburn Memorial Park cemetery at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 14, 2012. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be directed to Hospice Advantage of East Alabama Medical Center. Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home & Crematory is directing. www.jeffcoattrant.com
