HAMPTON - Robert Jackson Curtin, 81, active church and civic leader, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2003. Born in Boston, Mass., he graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1941, served in the Merchant Marine during World War II where he participated in the Normandy Invasion and was awarded a decoration for heroism under fire.

He returned to work two years for United Fruit Company after the war before settling in Hampton in 1947 when he joined the Bank of Phoebus as a teller. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mr. Curtin participated as a lay reader and had been finance chairman of the church building committee. His banking career included vice president of Merchant's National Bank, senior vice president of Virginia National Bank and senior vice president and area executive officer for Sovran Bank's Hampton area offices. He retired in 1986 after 39 years.

A former member of the Hampton City Council, and former chairman of the Hampton Planning Commission, Mr. Curtin was a past president of the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, had served as a commissioner on the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority, was a commissioner on the Hampton Industrial Development Authority and had been chairman of the Peninsula Retail Merchant's Association. He was a past president of the Phoebus Civic Association and the Virginia Peninsula Chapter of Association of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rosemary Fuller Curtin; four sons, Robert J. Curtin Jr. of Hampton, Col. Joseph G. Curtin, U.S. Army of Woodbridge, Thomas F. Curtin of Newport News and Philip G. Curtin of Virginia Beach; and seven grandchildren.
