US NAVY WORLD WAR II

Lee Roy Johnson, Sr., age 85, of Atkinson, passed peacefully from his earthly life to his eternal rest on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 14, 1927, in Pender County, the son of the late John Wesley and Ethel Woodcock Johnson. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Addie Horrell and brother, Frank Johnson.

Lee Roy is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Alice Squires Johnson; daughter, Nancy; son, Roy; grandchildren, great grandchildren; sisters, Kay, Martha, Inez, and Nellie; and many nieces and nephews.

Lee Roy served his country honorably on the USS Lindsey during WW II in the US Navy. He was a Pender County farmer and worked at Federal Paper Company in their Reforestation Program. Being very active in his community, Lee Roy was a Boy Scout Leader in Atkinson Troop 730 and served on the Pender County Board of Education. He was a member of Atkinson Lodge No. 612 A.F. & A.M. where he had served as Master, served as past District Deputy of Atkinson OES Chapter 280, was a 32 degree mason and member of Scottish Rite Bodies in Wilmington. He was a member of Woodmen of the World Atkinson Lodge 244. Most important in Lee Roy's life were his Christian beliefs and his church, Atkinson Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and in many other capacities through the years.

Lee Roy was a man of faith, honesty and caring who served his church, community and most of all his family with unceasing devotion. Well done Thy good and faithful servant.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with Pastor Steve Gasque officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Woodcock Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home until hour of the service.

Memorial gifts may be given to Atkinson Baptist Church, PO Box 368, Atkinson NC 28421 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physician's Dr., Wilmington NC 28401.

The family would like to thank Jennifer Register and staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Dr. William Eakins and his staff for all the special care and kindness given to Lee Roy and to them.
