Bertha Jane Cook was the daughter of Ann Eliza Johnson and Elias Nelson Cook. She grew up with her twin sister, Myrtle May, and 6 other sibling: David Henry, Mary "Mayme"; Hattie Mabel, Pearl Bessie, Carl Clinton and Lloyd. Two sisters (Lucy Rose and Emma) died in early childhood.
As an adult, Bertha lived for many years with her sister, Pearl who was a teacher. Bertha lived all of her life in Monroe County, Iowa, dying at age 86,
