Russell F. Chapin Sr., 89, of Stockton CA passed away on September 2, 2011, at his home in Stockton surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Frances Chapin and parents Frank and Edith Chapin. He was the last of 8 children: John Chapin, Theresa Wallace, Lillian Roetschke, Lawrence Chapin, Frank Chapin, Gordon Chapin, and Charles Chapin. He is survived by his loving family: daughters Cheryl (Steve) Lee and Connie (John) Hume; son Russ (Monica) Chapin Jr.; grandchildren David (Tracy) Fluty, Mathew Fluty, Ashley Lee, Tina (Josh) Brister, and Ashley Speidel; great grandchildren Madison Fluty and Garrett Fluty.
He was born in Redding, CA on October 16, 1921, and graduated from Shasta High School, class of 1936. The family settled in Stockton in the late 1930's and after proudly serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific he and his brother Charles established the family's business Chapin Brothers Inc. where he worked for over 45 years. He and his brother Charles and sister-in-law Norma Chapin continued their lifelong partnership farming almonds and walnuts for another 25 years.
He was always active in the community and an avid sportsman. He was President of the Stockton Sportsman's Club where he established the pheasant program. He was an expert marksman in trap shooting and at the age of 80 won the Club's annual Silver Buckle Shoot. He was a member and chairman of the San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation Commission and was instrumental in the planning and development of Oak Grove Regional Park.
He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and most of all being with his brother Charles where they were the truest of friends working and spending time together at their beloved ranch. His last trip was this Spring where he and his family had a wonderful time visiting Washington, D.C., Gettysburg, and Virginia.
He was hard working, compassionate, loved his family and country, and was a true American in every sense of the word.
A private family graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 7th at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is honored to serve the Chapin familt. Please sign the online register and share memories at www.cherokeememorial.com.
