Edith Gabel Burkett, 85, Abilene, Tex., a Plymouth County native, died Thursday (Aug. 9, 1990) at her home in Abilene.

Private services were held Saturday, Aug. 11, in Abilene.

Services in Iowa will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the Adaville United Methodist Church, Johnson Township, Plymouth County. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at LeMars Memorial Cemetery under direction of Foster-Adams Funeral Home of Hamlin, Tex. Casketbearers will be grandson and nephews.

The former Edith Gabel was born Dec. 30, 1904, in Plymouth County, the daughter of the late Milton and Lena Gabel. She graduated from LeMars High School in 1922, and attended Teachers' Training School in Cedar Falls.

Her marriage to Lowell Bruce Burkett took place July 29, 1924, in Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City and LeMars; Las Gatos, Calif., and Omaha before returning to LeMars in 1943.

Mr. Burkett died April 8, 1948, in LeMars. Edith Burkett moved to Abilene in 1953, and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene.

Survivors are three sons, Kenneth Wayne Burkett, of St. Joseph, Mo.; John Howard Burkett of Alexandria, Va.; and Terry Bruce Burkett of Austin; three daughters, Jeanne Audrey Olson of Elk Point; Margery Ardele Barnhill of Abilene and Linda Frances Smith of Athens, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gordn (Alberta) Singer Burkett of Anaheim, Calif., and a son-in-law, Eddie Bull Sr., Abilene whose late wife was Phyliss Burkett; five sisters, Mabel Herman and Martha Philipps, both of LeMars; Mildred Stoel, Akron; Leone Knowles of Council Bluffs and Evelyn Gabel of Santa Rosa, N. M.; 24 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Gordon Leslie Burkett on Dec. 15, 1977; a daughter, Phyllis Ann Bull, March 5, 1990; a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and two sisters.
